How long have you been in business?
Bailey's has been owned and operated by the Bailey family since 1899, yes over a century and is now in the hands of the third and fourth generations. Mary Mead Bailey Johnson and her husband Richard have been carrying on family tradition since 2004. They have been joined by their children, Calli, Bailie and Dane to carry on these traditions representing the fourth generation.
What is your primary product or service?
The primary product we provide is Customer Service. You will find that each member of our staff puts our customers first, just as our owners do. This combined with an in house Butcher Shop, Fresh Seafood Market, Full Service Deli, Scratch Bakery, a Wide Variety of Produce, Organic, Gluten Free and Natural food choices and a diverse selection to choose from makes for a truly pleasurable shopping experience. We have further expanded our business to include Sanibel Catering Company by Bailey's providing complete catering services for large and small occasions.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Friday August 13th, 2004 Hurricane Charley tore through Southwest Florida wrecking havoc on the Islands of Sanibel and Captiva. We arrived on Sunday the 15th to help with the recovery of the family business. Fortunately there was little physical damage to the buildings, but the power was off for several days and our backup generator failed during the storm. No refrigeration equals a big mess. However, this was an opportunity to see our beautiful island at its worst, but the community at its best. We were bitten by the Island bug and it was not No See Ums.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We focus on our customers. We are the oldest grocer in the state of Florida and have had time to hone our skills. Our product offerings are well beyond similar size stores and better than some larger stores. We are deeply involved in our islands. Our role is our community is well known and continues to evolve just as our business has over the past 117 years.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We concentrate our efforts on our flagship store and have now opened a small store at The Sundial Resort and Spa on Middle Gulf Drive right here on Sanibel Island.

What type of payments do you accept?
Cash is wonderful, we also gladly accept all major credit cards.
Which areas do you service?
The islands of Sanibel and Captiva. Sanibel Catering Company by Bailey's travels the state of Florida on request.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
The third generation of the Bailey Family owns and operates the business. Mead and Richard along with their 3 children are there everyday.
What are your hours of operation?
7:00 AM until 9:00 PM or until our last customer of the day is taken care of. This is seven days a week and all holidays except for Christmas Day.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
You have a wonderful staff, everyone is so friendly and helpful. I wish my hometown grocery store was like this. Leaving our store feeling that they had been served exactly like they want to be.
